Man found dead in tanning bed 3 days after hitting the gym at Planet Fitness in Indianapolis

An investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the death of the man whose body was found in a solarium three days after entering the hospital. Planet Fitness in Indianapolis.

Just before 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department They received a report that a body was found at Planet Fitness.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 39-year-old Derek E. Sink.

According to police records obtained by 13News, Sink’s family last contacted him on Friday and reported him missing on Sunday.

Police confirmed to Fox News Digital only that they were investigating a death at the gym and did not elaborate on the specifics of the investigation.

A woman who was at Planet Fitness Monday morning told 13News that she and other members noticed a foul odor in the building that got worse near the tanning rooms.

The woman also questioned how such a thing could happen.

“I guess the tanning salon has a door, but still, why aren’t we concerned about the tanning salon potentially being closed for three days?” Elizabeth Len asked.

Sink’s family told 13News: struggled with drugs While his aunt told the news station that he was wearing an ankle monitor, which helped investigators determine that he never left the gym, a needle was reportedly found in the room with him.

Planet Fitness released a statement to Fox News Digital confirming the death and sharing its condolences.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members and the franchisee is working with local authorities as part of the investigation. At Planet Fitness, we have strong operational brand protocols in place for the safety and well-being of our team. Members are our top priority,” McCall Gosselin, Planet Fitness’ chief corporate affairs officer, said in a statement. “We work closely with our local franchisees to ensure they maintain these brand protocols.” he said.

Sink’s family also told 13News they hope to see stricter policies on cleaning and an end-of-day checklist from staff to prevent this from happening to another family.

The circumstances surrounding Sink’s death are under investigation.
