Ongoing post-election violence in Mozambique is worrying – Cabinet

The Cabinet expressed concern about the ongoing post-election violence in Mozambique, calling on all parties concerned to use established legal channels to redress their election-related grievances.

“Ongoing post-election violence is a cause for concern, and all parties unaffected by the situation should exhaust established legal remedies to resolve their election-related grievances and continue to build on the peace foundations laid in the Maputo Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement,” the minister said. he said. Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said at the post-Cabinet briefing on Wednesday.

The Minister explained that SADC and AU representatives were present in the elections in Mozambique and that these structures showed that the elections were generally free despite some disruptions. There was no violence or intimidation during the elections.

“Just like South Africa, the USA and Botswana, Mozambique has a mechanism and system based on contested elections. South Africa’s view is that, just like in South Africa, any party that is unhappy with the election results should do so using the proper channels.

“Parties in Mozambique must present their complaints and evidence of dissatisfaction or dissatisfaction through constitutional counsel and allow counsel to decide on the matter. A period of time was given for this.”

The minister expressed concern about recent violence, especially violence that has fueled unrest, saying it “set a dangerous precedent”.
