Former Monroe County ISD employee arrested after barricaded hostage situation

MONROE COUNTY, Michigan. – A former Monroe County Intermediate School District employee was arrested following a barricaded hostage situation.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 25, in the 1101 block of S. Rainsnville Road in Monroe County.

Officials said staff alerted Sergeant Jason Miller to a man acting erratically outside the building while he was assigned to ISD.

Miller was able to find the man, identified as an ISD employee, in the back parking lot and was chatting.

While talking to the former employee, the man made movements and gestures that suggested he might be armed, Miller said.

Miller alerted Monroe County Dispatch to the situation where multiple units from across the county were converging on the area.

The man began walking south from the school, eventually exiting the school grounds, and Miller followed him.

After leaving school grounds, the former employee entered an occupied, unlocked home in the 1100 block of S. Raisinville Road.

There were two female victims and one male victim in the home. After entering the dormitory, the former teacher barricaded herself in her bedroom with one of the women.

Deputies surrounded the house and entered; That’s when they began negotiations with the former school employee.

Deputies forced entry into the bedroom, eventually rescued the hostage and arrested the man on a home invasion charge without further incident.

One of the women suffered minor injuries and was treated at Promedica Monroe Regional Hospital.

The Monroe County Detective Bureau is still investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7530 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800 Speak-Up.
