A British tourist who got lost at 15,000ft in the Peruvian mountains told how a stray dog ’emerged from the fog’ and took him to his destination.

The man, known on social media as ‘El Güero Inglés’ or the Blonde Briton, was walking on the famous Santa Cruz track near the city of Huaraz when he became separated from his group on the second day of the walk.

He hoped to reach the picturesque Punta Unión pass, 15,000 ft above sea level, but the route was covered in snow, ice and thick fog.

The hiker said that just as he was left alone, a friendly dog approached him and wagged its tail in scenes reminiscent of the actions of TV rescue dog Lassie.

“I decided to trust his knowledge of the mountain,” the man said, according to Italian newspaper La Stampa.

He said he wondered what a dog could be doing so high up, but was surprised at how it knew the routes around the mountain and directed him to a sign. He points towards his destination: Punta Unión.

The Englishman explained that once they reached the top, the pair quietly waited together for other hikers to arrive.

And from then on, the stray dog remained near the group of hikers who continued their walk.

Incredibly, when they got back to camp, he said there was another dog waiting for them at camp, and the duo continued with the group for another 8.5 miles.

A local later told the British tourist that dogs in the area followed hikers into the mountains as if they were trained guides.

‘El Güero Inglés’ recorded his experience during the walk in a video that he later posted on his Instagram account.

In the video, he can be heard asking the dog the following question: ‘What are you doing here? How did you get here?’

He then points to the mountain and says: ‘We need to go somewhere there. OK, show me the way. If we get lost I blame you, now it’s your responsibility.’
