Police arrest man who barricaded himself in southwest Portland home

On Saturday morning, Portland police arrested a man who had been barricaded in a Southwest Portland home since Friday night.

Police responded to a call just after 11:30 p.m. Friday about noises coming from outside a home split into four apartments in the 2400 block of Southwest 5th Avenue. When they arrived, they saw a man entering the basement.

Police said the man had a knife and refused to come out of the basement. Crisis negotiators were brought in, residents were evacuated and surrounding streets were closed.

Police negotiated with the man for several hours before using pepper spray “to create a disturbing environment” around 6 a.m. Saturday morning, according to a police news release. When the man still did not drop the knife or come out of the basement, police used irritant gas.

The man surrendered to police officers around 6.40am and was arrested.
