79-year-old woman visits the cemetery of loved ones killed in a hit-and-run; Amazon driver charged

CANTON, Ga. (WANF/Gray News) – An Amazon driver has been charged in the hit-and-run of a 79-year-old woman in Georgia.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a hit-and-run report on Cumming Highway near Jordan Lane at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

That’s where Sandra Fitts was found dead, authorities said.

The woman and her husband recently sold their nearby home but continue to visit the area to visit a nearby cemetery where family members are buried and to feed some feral cats, Capt. Jay Baker said.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation,” he said.

Authorities said evidence at the scene led them to believe the vehicle was likely an Amazon delivery truck.

While responding to the crash, a deputy noticed an Amazon truck blocking Bishop Drive and called for help searching for the truck.

Baker said they determined the Amazon driver was heading west on the Cumming Highway when he struck the victim.

A Canton Police officer found the truck with damage matching evidence found at the crash scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said the investigation revealed that the vehicle that hit the victim was an Amazon truck.

Authorities later arrested 24-year-old London Best and charged him with first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death.

“He apparently knew what was going on and actually continued to deliver packages to the area,” Baker said.

An Amazon spokesperson said Best is currently unable to deliver on behalf of the company.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones at this difficult time. The company wrote to WANF: We will support local police during the investigation.

“One thing all drivers need to keep in mind is that this is a terrible situation, but if he had not left the scene he probably would not have been charged with these crimes, especially these crimes,” Baker said.
