14-year-old Yonkers student accused of stabbing another student

Gorton High School in Yonkers was temporarily quarantined Thursday morning after a fight broke out between two classmates.

Yonkers Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Dr. “A student brought a knife to school and committed a targeted attack on another student,” Frank Hernandez said.

It was learned that the 17-year-old student, whose name was not disclosed, was in good health at the hospital, and a 14-year-old suspect was in custody.

Police said the teenager faces charges including assault, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

After the argument, the school was quarantined for a short time.

There are metal detectors used every day at school, but they are only used by some random kids.

Parents and students say that’s not enough.

Ninth grader Ayleen Quino was in class when the attack occurred.

“It was a little scary because you never know who’s going to use a knife because they have metal detectors but they don’t always use them,” Quino said.

After the curfew was lifted, school education continued for the rest of the day.

“Just do the right thing,” pleaded Teresa Johnson, a mother awaiting her child’s release, “…and the right thing is not violence.”
