A deputy minister for the good governance party NSC left the cabinet because he was angered by the cabinet’s response to last week’s violence in Amsterdam.

Nora Achahbar, who was tasked with resolving the child benefit scandal compensation scheme, was reportedly shocked by the “extremely racist language” used by the other three parties in the right-wing coalition at Monday’s cabinet meeting.

Ministers and leaders of three other coalition parties – the far-right PVV, the pro-rural BBB and the VVD – blamed young people of Moroccan origin for attacks on Israeli football fans and others in Amsterdam following the Ajax Maccabi Tel Aviv. game.

Prime Minister Dick Schoof also spoke of an “integration problem” in the Netherlands and did not rule out the possibility of having dual citizenship citizens convicted of anti-Semitism have their Dutch passports taken away on the grounds of terrorism, upon the call of the other three parties.

Sources told broadcaster NOS that Achahbar thought several ministers had made racist remarks when discussing the issue at Monday’s cabinet meeting. He also reportedly expressed his feelings openly about the choice of words.

Achahbar, 42, was born in Morocco and has a law degree. He was a prosecutor for several years, and before that he was a lawyer.

He became the second NSC minister to resign. Earlier this month, the Tax Minister Folkert Idsinga He resigned after joining calls for coalition partner PVV to provide more information about its investments.

According to ADOther ministers of the MGK are also considering resigning. Some insiders even suggest the cabinet could collapse, although much depends on the outcome of Friday’s cabinet meeting.

Achahbar is expected to make a statement later on Friday.
