See the light with D’Arc at Cheltenham

It took Paul Nicholls years to win the Paddy Power Gold Cup but he is now on a solid track and on Saturday he achieved his fourth success in the competition in the last 13 renewals.

This time the Ditcheat master has two wires in his hand and both of them are in the top three in the bet; the clear favorite is Ginny’s Destiny, a near-duplicate of last year’s hero, Stage Star.

Expected to play at the highest level at some point this season, he can still keep the distance with a handicap mark of 155 and dash silly off the front end with excellent route form.

The main issue I have with him is the terrain, as he has improved in soft conditions throughout his rookie season and looks to me like a future three-miler who will use his stamina on intermediate rides.

With that in mind I’m not sure he can torch this field on good ground and I’m happy to go against him either way for a bigger fee at 3/1 odds.

Ga Law and Il Ridoto look like solid players in that regard, while In Excelsis Deo is a good player if he can aim a strong gallop and jump well, but the one I keep looking back on is Gavin Cromwell’s. HARTUR D’ARC.

Punters run the risk of swinging big prices on such an unexposed individual from this yard, with the seven-year-old having just five chase starts, including when he was not out of the Irish Grand National when he was last seen.

He also made three starts for Cromwell but hit really good form in the first two, winning easily in the beginners’ chase at Clonmel and then reaching the Leinster National at Naas and entering the race without any problems.

Both of these successes show he has the gear over two and a half miles and it is encouraging to see him win a point to point and the first hurdle on good ground.

Considering all this, it is no wonder that Cromwell decided this race for himself and secured the services of Johnny Burke, who had won it two years earlier with the aforementioned Ga Bill.

Cromwell, who has three winners over the last few seasons, is targeting this meeting these days and, just 1lb off the handicap, this horse poses more danger than his odds would suggest from the foot of the weights.

You may be a bit bigger than 20/1 but we will back it with sponsors going five places.

Verdict: 2.20 Returns to HARTUR D’ARC at Cheltenham

Give thanks another chance

The drop continues on Tony Martin’s Hamsiyann at 3.30 in the Paddy Power Intermediate Hurdle and although I may have missed the boat there, he looks like he’s got a huge chance and I don’t want to put him in the game.

He gave stablemate and Cesarewitch winner Alphonse Le Grande a piece for a narrow defeat at Chester in May and was a huge standout on his previous start over hurdles at Ascot.

When traveling on timber, it’s easy to spot him on cruise control at the bottom of the hill, and he can go even quicker and gain well.

I’ll avoid this race for the sake of support THANKS FOR THE HELP In the From The Horses Mouth Podcast Handicap over three miles in 2.55.

David Pipe’s gray son Martaline has slimmed down towards the midfield after leaving the 100/30 favorite for the Pertemps Final at the 2023 Festival, but has dropped 10lbs in the weights since then and now looks like the time to bounce back.

At Uttoxeter last month he had, pardon the pun, a pipe opener and I wouldn’t have paid any attention to that result on his first run in 237 days with his cheeks removed.

That should have put him in the right spot and the handicapper took the chance of dropping him 9lb in two runs; He returned to a mark just 1lb higher than when he jumped emphatically at Chepstow in February last year.

With his cheeks reattached and the stable in good condition, it would be no surprise if on a good day he would be a threat to anyone if that were the case.

Verdict: 2.55 at Cheltenham THANK YOU HELP

Gold digger in amateur racing

Away from the ITV cameras, the Steel Plate & Chapters Ltd Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Chase looks like a good race to bet on and I can see it JIMY THE DIGGER He runs well.

Henry Daly’s horse had been in trouble for a while but he returned to form with his second behind The Newest One on this track where he lost some ground last time out when there was no room left on the homecoming.

He too jumped two from the finish and, all things considered, is fancying reversing the form with a 2lb swing in his favor with the winner here.

They will need a good gallop to bring his stamina into play, but it could well be that Deise Aba and Captain Speaking are two candidates to keep The Newest One honest at the front end.

He has a course and distance win to his name with a 2lb higher score and has proven he still has what it takes to compete at this level where he is now worth a place alongside double figure prices.

Verdict: 1.10 Return to JIMMY THE DIGGER at Cheltenham

Sea star in Newcastle

Finally, Roger Varian TYRHINE SEA Listed BetUK can land the Churchill Stakes at Newcastle in all weather conditions.

The six-year-old learned his trade on this Tapeta ground and scored a hat-trick in his first three starts there before trying his hand at grass.

He’s not as good on the grass, but he continued his progress on multitrack at Lingfield last winter, finishing runner-up in the Winter Derby and winning the Quebec Stakes on his ideal 10-kilometre ride.

He hasn’t been seen since this year’s Winter Derby at Southwell where he performed well in third, he has an absence of 266 days to overcome but he has performed very well in the past and Varian is adept at giving them a long break.

His record for horses returning from 250+ days off in all weather is 24/74 at 32.43% and his horse is able to make the most of the 7lb from Dubai Honor who is unproven at Newcastle and on the Tapeta surface.

Verdict: 3.15 Back to Tyrrhenian SEA at Newcastle
