Cheney Tech terminated early due to suspected fentanyl presence

MANCHESTER, CT (WFSB) – Cheney Technical High School in Manchester was suspended early Friday for what state police described as a suspicious substance.

Around 10:35 a.m., school security notified the school resource officer that a suspicious powdery substance was found on the bathroom floor.

Field tests were conducted as part of this research. The substance is suspected to be fentanyl, state police said.

“No incidents of exposure or injury were reported and schools were closed early as a precaution,” state police said. “This remains an active and ongoing investigation and there is no threat to the public at this time.”

After-school activities have also been cancelled.

“This decision was made following the discovery of a suspicious substance on campus. To our knowledge, there is no exposure to students or staff. State Police are currently working with our school and district administrators,” said Communications Director Kerry Markey. Connecticut Technical Education and Career System.

Devon Muller graduated from Cheney Tech last year.

“We never had a serious drug problem when I was at this high school, so to hear this the year after graduation is crazy,” Muller said.

It is unclear how the suspected fentanyl entered the school.

“I think a lot of parents would definitely be worried because you send their kids to school and you find drugs there. You don’t want to see that in high school,” Muller added.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Cheney Tech School Resource Officer Police Officer Justin Nunez at 860-534-1000.
