Hartford basketball coach sexually assaulted young player

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – A Hartford basketball coach has been convicted of sexually assaulting one of his players.

The coach’s name is Danny Lawhorn Jr., 33, of Hartford. was determined as .

According to the hearing, police were dispatched to a hotel on a report of sexual assault.

The victim was an international basketball player hosted and coached by Lawhorn.

At the time, Lawhorn was the coach and manager of a local AAU basketball league.

State’s Attorney Sharmese L. Wolcott said the victim texted Lawhorn asking him to come to her room to help with stretching after practice and before the tournament.

The victim said Lawhorn assaulted him during that interaction, according to Wolcott.

The victim managed to escape from the hotel with the help of a family member. Once he got to safety, hotel staff helped him call the police.

Later that morning, Hartford Police arrested Lawhorn on location. Police said the suspect was also in possession of packaged crack cocaine for sale.

Lawhorn pleaded guilty to federal felony drug charges.

He was also found guilty of second-degree sexual assault.

Koç was sentenced to 10 years in prison, suspended after serving four years, and sentenced to 10 years of probation.

Lawhorn was also ordered to register with the CT Sex Offender Registry.

State’s Attorney Walcott said: The victim in this case endured many accusations against his character and credibility and eventually told the judge, ‘I am not broken’ and listed his many accomplishments since this incident. “Deputy State’s Attorney Clark and I are grateful to be able to bring justice to a young man whose innocence was taken away without his consent.”
