A boy was left with a “huge” permanent scar on his chest after another teenager used Snapchat to drag him into an alley and stab him with a machete. Kevin Biji was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of attempted murder for the horrific attack he committed when he was just 16 years old.

The other teenager nearly died after being stabbed twice in the chest and was only saved by life-saving surgery. Despite the brutal attack, he was able to cycle home and seek help from family members, before texting his partner to warn her that he “could die”.

a trial Liverpool Crown Court They heard that Biji and the complainant attended the same sixth form college and were seeing the same girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons and will instead be referred to as Girl A. On the evening of April 9 this year, the boy – also 16 years old – was at home when he received a Snapchat message on his account “inviting him to his home for sex”.

Prosecutor David Birrell described the teenager as “a bit suspicious” and asked if he was “with the defendant” but was told he was not. They then decided to meet in a side street off Hailsham Road. Aigburth.

He cycled to the location and waited in the initially deserted alley before, at around 10.30pm, Biji “suddenly appeared” wearing a balaclava and brandishing a “machete about a foot long”. Kamala Way, now 17 years old Norris GreenHe “attacked” his victim with a knife and told her “that’s my tinnitus”, referring to Girl A, while the boy desperately tried to fend off the attack using his bike.

Although he was stabbed twice in the chest, he managed to get on his bike and pedal after the attacker shouted at him to “get back”. He managed to escape home and when he got inside he told his mother that he had been stabbed while she was giving first aid to him and his sister.

He was rushed to the hospital after sending a text to Girl B, his “closeted girlfriend”, saying he had “been stabbed and could die”. aintree To the hospital by ambulance. Doctors later discovered that the gun had punctured his pericardium and caused a life-threatening build-up of fluid, but he was saved by emergency surgery.

Meanwhile, Girl B texted Biji and “asked him what was going on”. He responded by saying “he came here to fuck her” and chillingly warned that he would “do this to her again” and also texted Girl A “telling her to hide her cell phone.”

Police visited his home early the next morning, at which time he attempted to escape through the backyard by running to the back of the house and was subsequently detained by police officers. During the search in the bedroom, a knife and a balaclava were seized.

During the interview, Biji gave a prepared statement claiming that he “just went out to talk” to the other boy and then apparently started hitting him with his bike. He later claimed he used the machete in self-defence, but said he “didn’t even realize he had stabbed” the complainant.

However, medical experts later determined that his injuries were “not consistent with accidental contact.” Doctors also stated that the wounds were caused by a “razor-sharp blade” using “force equivalent to a hard fist.”

In his statement read to the court on his behalf, the child explained that he “suffered great pain for a considerable period of time” and had difficulty sleeping. He detailed how the incident affected his performance at GCSEs, while he “no longer trusts people” and is “cautious in public places”.

As well as experiencing “nightmares and flashbacks”, the attack left him with a “large scar on his chest”. He described it as “a constant reminder of what Kevin did that night.”

Biji was found guilty of attempted murder by the jury; He had previously admitted the lesser offenses of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing a bladed article in a public place, but denied intending to kill. He has a previous conviction for causing grievous bodily harm relating to an incident that occurred in 2022, when he was just 14 years old.

The names of defendants under the age of 18 generally cannot be disclosed by the media. But a judge lifted these reporting restrictions following a legal challenge from the ECHO due to the “great gravity” of its offending.

Lloyd Morgan, defending, told the court on Friday: “Kevin wants me to express remorse, remorse and shame for committing this offence. The issue at trial was his intent. He agreed to cause the injuries. “If he is presented with the opportunity, he would be interested in restorative justice for someone his age. will welcome this opportunity, which is a very mature step.

“Life imprisonment is always a sentence of last resort. This should be especially true for a young criminal. He has experienced many childhood traumas that affected his emotional and mental development.

“While his previous conviction was serious and involved carrying a knife, this offense was committed when he was 14 and two years before this offence. In that incident, he had a knife in his hand but did not use the knife. In this incident, a knife was used to cause the injuries sustained by the victim.

“He was exposed to domestic violence. He was separated from his parents. He was raised by his grandparents until he was seven or eight years old.

“He witnessed his father’s alcohol addiction. He lacked a positive male role model during a difficult upbringing that included emotional abuse and neglect. These are no excuses for his behavior, but they do provide an explanation for why this young man consumed so much alcohol.” He acted like him.”

Biji, who appeared via video link at HMP Wetherby yesterday afternoon wearing a gray Nike jumper, put his head in his hands and then sat shaking his head after he was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in a young offenders institute. He was also given a restraining order banning him from contacting his victim indefinitely.

Sentencing Judge Stuart Driver KC said: “The defendant put on his balaclava and grabbed the knife. He ambushed his victim. He stabbed him twice with hard fist strength. He wanted him dead.”

“The victim continues to suffer physical harm and psychological harm, including large, permanent scarring. The facts of this crime are very serious. A pre-sentence report concludes that he poses a very high risk of serious harm to others. What I observed During the hearing, Kevin ‘s case showed nothing to refute this suggestion.

“It was planned. The victim was deliberately led into a trap. There was intent to kill and death was only avoided, first by luck and secondly by surgical skill.

“The level of risk is unfortunately very high in my view. There is no reliable estimate of how long Kevin will remain such a danger.

“Therefore, the existing alternative sentences do not provide sufficient protection. Although life imprisonment is a sentence to be used as a last resort, in my opinion, regardless of the youth of the defendant, the facts are clear enough to justify the imposition of a life sentence.”
