Authorities urge vehicle owners to be careful before winter

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – As the cold of winter begins to approach the Great Nebraska plains, it’s time to prepare for the season’s unpredictable weather conditions. Whether navigating icy highways, tackling snowdrifts, or dealing with freezing temperatures, being prepared for the worst can make all the difference.

An emergency kit can be a lifeline in the event of an unexpected breakdown or stranding.

“Make sure you have a first aid kit in your home and in your car, and when you are traveling, let people know when you are leaving, and if people deviate from that route, they should let them know when they get there,” said District 51 Director Brandon Myers. Emergency Management.

Myers emphasized the importance of having enough fuel.

“We tell people traveling in the winter not to get on the interstate and to wait until the last minute, they only have 30 miles to refuel and then get on the road, and I do that myself and when it gets halfway there, start looking for another fuel station,” said Myers

If people don’t have access to water, don’t panic — snow can be a surprising lifesaver, Myers said.

“If it’s actively snowing, if people have glasses, put snow in the glasses and bring them back to the car and let them thaw in the water; people can get hydrated that way,” said Myers.

Ultimately, authorities say, being prepared with the right tools and safety gear can ensure people’s journeys are not only more comfortable but also safer for both the driver and their companions.
