Geordies are the cheapest when it comes to buying Christmas gifts… so where does YOUR family rank?

Geordies are the ‘strictest’ people when it comes to buying Christmas gifts for their nearest and dearest, a study has found.

Researchers surveyed 2,000 Brits to find out who planned to spend the most and least on festive gifts.

Research by Outlet Shopping at The O2 found the average spend was £275.

If every adult in the UK spent this much, the country’s Christmas shopping list would reach £15 billion.

Geordies such as Ant & Dec, Cheryl and Jimmy Nail said they would spend just £219 on average, while Scots such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Lorraine Kelly said they would spend £312.

Fold, from Yorkshire, was the second most generous, spending an average of £305 despite Scots and Yorkshire people having a “reputation for being tight”.

The people of Yorkshire are famously short on money, which is summed up by the saying ‘A Yorkshireman is a Scotsman stripped of all his generosity’.

Other jokes include that copper wire was invented by two Scots fighting over a penny.

Despite this, the regional expenditure New Year’s list was formed as follows;

2 – Yorkshire and Humber – £305

3 – East Midlands – £297

4 – North West – £296

5 – South East – £277

6 – Wales – £259

7 – East of England – £251

8 – South West -242£

Women generally spend more money than men; They spend £260 on men’s clothing and £290 on festive gifts.

Those over the age of 55 spent the most, with an average of £330, while those aged 45-55 spent £310, those aged 35-44 spent £290, those aged 25-34 spent £240 and those aged 18 spent £180. -24.

Gareth Dunk, 56, from Newcastle, said he planned to spend just £100 on gifts, adding: ‘I usually give my two grandchildren a tenner, buy my wife some perfume and that’s it.’

Hilary Taylor, 35, from Edinburgh, said her budget was £400.

He said: ‘I love giving it to people and seeing their faces when they get something they really want. ‘I usually spend the whole year finding and buying gifts for everyone in my family.’

A spokesperson for Outlet Shopping at The O2 said: ‘The average Brit will do all their Christmas shopping this year for £275.

‘Nationally, Scots will spend the most with an average set budget of £312, followed by Yorkshire and the Humber at £305.

‘The most frugal Christmases will be in the North East, with an average budget of £219 for gifts.’
