K-Wings offense can’t keep up, falls short of the Komets

The Kalamazoo Wings (6-5-0-0), the proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, fell short by 5 defeats against the Fort Wayne Komets (8-3-0-0) on Saturday at the Wings Events Center – 3.

Both teams finished the first period goalless. Fort Wayne struck first with a goal at 4:46 of the second, just two seconds after the Kalamazoo penalty expired.

Ayden MacDonald (3) tied things up for the K-Wings at 6:37. MacDonald redirected Zach Berzolla’s (2) first shot to find the back of the goal.

Komets regained the lead with a goal at 18:25.

Then, with just eight seconds left in the middle frame, Max Humitz (5) picked up a loose puck from the hole and lobbed the ball toward the goal to tie the score at two. Quinn Preston (5) created the turnover by deflecting Fort Wayne’s pass for a goal by Humitz.

Kalamazoo struck again on the first shift of the third period when Preston (2) scored at 23 seconds. Joe Arntsen (3) sent his first shot from the left and Preston sent the ball into the goal.

The Komets tied the game at 1:54, added the game-winning goal with 1:03 left, and added the empty-net goal with 2.8 seconds left on the clock.

Jonathan Lemieux (5-3-0-0) was outstanding in net and made 40 saves in the defeat.
