CHICAGO (Wales) — A Southwest Side community is calling for the permanent closure of a bar Friday night shooting injured a security guard and killed a man.

Although Halina’s Pub is closed for now, neighborhood residents are making efforts to keep it closed following a deadly shooting during the bar’s reopening.

“This was the first night they were open, and we’re not going to stand for that to happen… for that to happen,” said Al Cacciottola, president of Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch.

While the “Open” sign has been cut, keeping the lights off at Halina’s Pub on Archer Avenue in Garfield Ridge has become an ongoing effort for neighbors.

“We will not tolerate this in our neighborhood,” said 13th District Ald. Marty Quinn said.

We will change the zoning… It will no longer be a drinking establishment and the community will have a front row seat to what happens next.

An argument between two men and a concealed vehicle permit holder led to a deadly shootout Friday night, police said.

“People are walking up and down this street,” Cacciottola said. “It could have been worse, and that’s why we’re sticking together as a community.”

All three men were shot. Chicago police said a 27-year-old man was dead when they arrived at the scene.

“Two criminals approached, parked behind a security guard and quickly opened fire,” said Ald. Quinn said. “Apparently, while the shooting was taking place out front, city of Chicago bailiffs were inside writing citations.”

Ald. Quinn told ABC7 that the owner of CCL was the security guard at the business. He says the place should never have been open after the recent change of ownership.

“My next step, in collaboration with the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch, will be to completely close this building,” Quinn said.

Those efforts will begin Tuesday night during the Neighborhood Watch’s monthly meeting near 52nd Street and South Austin.

“There will be crazy people,” Cacciottola said. “The last thing we want to see is people saying, ‘Our neighborhood is going. It’s time to pack up and go.'”

“We’re going to change the area,” Quinn said. “This will no longer be a drinking establishment and the community will have a front row seat to what happens next.”

ABC7 reached out to the owner of the bar but did not hear back.

Police say no one has been arrested at this time in connection with the shooting investigation. The security guard’s condition was finally critical. The other man who survived the conflict was taken to the hospital in good health.
