Abdul Awal Mintoo, former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), expressed harsh criticism against the Bangladesh bank today (November 17), claiming that the bank has become the most dictatorial institution in the country.

At the same time, BNP deputy chairman Mintoo claimed that the central bank’s actions have seriously damaged the stability and performance of commercial banks in Bangladesh.

Speaking at a dialogue titled “Business Environment Reform in Bangladesh: Interim Government Agenda” organized by the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) held at BRAC Center Auditorium in Dhaka’s Mohakhali, he suggested that the first step in reform is central restructuring. bank.

The BNP leader said, “The central bank urgently needs restructuring to end its authoritarian practices. Those who are most affected by these dictatorial approaches need to be included in the process of establishing banking policies.” he said.

He also said, “Everyone is talking about reform, but who will do it? The interim government? This is an ongoing process and it is not possible for a country to completely reform in a short time.” he said.

Emphasizing political reform first, the former FBCCI president said, “First of all, this needs to be given priority. Otherwise, what could not be achieved in the last forty years will remain unachievable in the future.”

“If reforms are carried out by corrupt people, it will not produce any positive results,” he added.

Referring to the suggestion of CPD Research Director Khondaker Golam Moazzem to close some banks, Mintoo said, “I do not agree with the idea of ​​closing banks indiscriminately. If someone commits corruption in the banking sector, he should be punished, but we cannot say that all banks will be closed.” should be closed.”
