Car chase turns into police-involved shooting, injuring one person in RoC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s (MSHP) Drug and Crime Control Division and the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) are investigating a trooper-involved shooting early Sunday morning.

According to MSHPJust before 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a police officer attempted to pull over a car speeding north on Interstate 35 (I-35) in Clay County, Missouri. However, instead of giving way, the driver accelerated and exited the highway.

The driver turned onto the highway heading south toward Jackson County, the report said. During the chase, the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) helicopter, which was monitoring the pursuit via a communications channel, chose to arrive at the scene and follow the hill. This allowed MSHP troopers in the field to stop the chase and listen to updates from KHP.

Eventually both pursuits were called off and the KHP helicopter returned across the state line to assist on another call.

MSHP troopers went to the car’s last known location and found it around 12:40 a.m. The car was parked at Linwood Boulevard and Van Brunt Boulevard and the driver was still inside.

According to MSHP’s report, officers tried to prevent the driver from running away again by placing patrol vehicles in front and behind the vehicle. But as the soldiers got out of their car, the driver turned around and hit one of the patrol cars, then accelerated forward and crashed into the other.

One of the soldiers standing outside the car fired a gun at the suspect who was trying to escape. But MSHP said the driver cleared the barricade and headed west on Interstate 70.

While fleeing, the driver went onto Prospect Avenue and stopped near 13th Street, where he then became “impaired.”

The driver then fled on foot but was taken into custody.

There were two passengers in the vehicle, one of whom was injured by a bullet.

While the injured passenger was taken to the hospital, it was learned that his life was not in danger. No soldiers were injured in the accident.

MSHP said the case was investigated by members of the Patrol Drug and Crime Control Division and KCPD. KCPD’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit is also assisting with the collection of evidence.
