Parts of Luzon still at risk of storm surge as Pepito exits

MANILA, Philippines — Even as Typhoon Pepito (international name: Man-yi) leaves the province’s weather Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), some Luzon areas remain at “moderate” to “high” risk of storm surge in the next 48 hours. The bureau warned early Monday morning.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) defines storm surge as “an abnormal rise in sea level that occurs during tropical cyclones or typhoons.”

“It is caused by the strong winds and low atmospheric pressure produced by tropical cyclones. As a tropical cyclone approaches the coast, strong winds push ocean water towards low-lying coastal areas, which can lead to flooding.” said Pagasa.
