A student died when a car driven by unlicensed teenagers crashed into a school property in eastern Japan.

SAITAMA – A 17-year-old passenger in a car driven by a 16-year-old student without a driver’s license died after being seriously injured when the vehicle overturned on the field of a high school in a city in eastern Japan on November 1. 16, police said.

The incident took place around 23:30 on the grounds of Saitama Sakae High School in Saitama’s Nishi District. A 17-year-old student, who lived in the same ward and was in the front passenger seat, was seriously injured in the head. He was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.

According to Omiyanishi Police Station, the vehicle was carrying three second-year high school students living in the dormitory at the school. The 16-year-old unlicensed student who was driving and another 17-year-old student sitting in the backseat were not injured. It was reported that the student driving the vehicle called the ambulance after the accident and reported that someone’s neck was stuck in the door.

The vehicle was used for field maintenance and was parked there without a license plate. Police are investigating how the student was driving and are considering a charge of dangerous driving resulting in death.
