ST-GEORGES — The Sûreté du Québec says it is no longer searching for a second person following a deadly house fire Friday in St-Georges, in the Beauce region southeast of Quebec City.

“After new information became available during the investigation, we confirmed that only one person was in the residence,” SQ spokeswoman Élizabeth Marquis-Guy said in a statement Sunday morning.

Emergency medical teams were called to the scene after the fire broke out on 120th Street at around 17:00 on Friday.

Initially, authorities were searching for two missing men: a man in his 50s and a man in his 60s.

The victim was found in the rubble on Saturday. “An autopsy will be performed to confirm the identity,” Marquis-Guy said.

Searches at the fire scene ended Sunday morning.

“The major crimes division of the Sûreté du Québec will determine whether there is a criminal aspect to the case. Marquis-Guy said the investigation was continuing in collaboration with the coroner to determine the circumstances of the fire.
