24 killed in bus crash in central Mexico

A bus in central Mexico overturned when it collided with a trailer detached from a truck carrying corn, killing 24 people and injuring five, Mexican officials said Saturday.

The crash occurred at midnight Friday as the bus was leaving Tepic in the western Mexican state of Nayarit for Ciudad Juarez in northern Mexico. The injured were treated at a hospital in Zacatecas.

Juan Manríquez Moreno, coordinator of the National Guard in Zacatecas, said in a video statement shared on social media that the truck trailer broke off on the highway. The passenger bus collided with the truck and overturned to the right side.

Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, secretary general of the Zacatecas government, also shared a statement from the accident scene. “We express our solidarity and condolences to all the families and people who lost a loved one in this unfortunate accident,” he said.

Authorities added that the highway where the accident occurred was closed while taking security measures in the region. Authorities said they would soon release the names of the injured so families could find them.
