Garland apartment murder: Arrest documents show suspects ‘finished’ victim after escaping initial stabbing

Arrest warrant against him two capital murder suspects New information has emerged about what he told police about a plot to murder a man who allowed them to live in his home Wreath apartment

Haley Barber and Leo Moore, both 20, are charged with capital murder in the death of 53-year-old Johnny Ross Jr.

One of Barber’s friends was the first to call the police.

The friend told police that he had recently bought a car from Barber that belonged to his “grandfather” and that he went to the apartment to get a spare key for the vehicle.

When he entered the apartment, he smelled a “foul odor,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

When the friend asked Barber where his “grandfather” was, Barber took him to the back bedroom and showed him a body wrapped in a material.

Barber allegedly told the friend that she and her boyfriend, Leo Moore, put something in Ross’ drink and stabbed him.

His friend told his mother what he saw and called the police.

When officers arrived at the apartment, they found two couches with what appeared to be dried blood stains, a Bowie knife and a white powdery substance, according to the affidavit.

They then forced their way into the bedroom and found a body wrapped in a rug and several garbage bags in the closet, according to documents.

Bloody towels and shoes were also found in the closet.

A neighbor told police he saw Barber and Moore drive away in a Mercedes belonging to Ross.

This neighbor provided FOX 4 with video showing Moore and Barber entering and exiting the apartment during the possible time frame of the stabbing.

The Mercedes was detected by a license plate reading camera on I-30 near Rockwall that same morning.

Police chased the vehicle for kilometers until the suspects got out of the vehicle and ran away.

Both were captured soon after.

Barber told police he and Moore planned to rob Ross for their car and money, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Moore told police that he stabbed Ross in the neck while he was sleeping on the couch, and the two left the apartment. When they returned 8 to 10 hours later, Ross was still alive.

Barber said he told Moore to “finish (Ross) off” because he didn’t want to see him suffer. Moore then allegedly stabbed her several times in the upper back, she told police.

Moore said he and Barber wrapped Ross’ body in a rug and put it in a closet.

Neighbors told FOX 4 the smell coming from the apartment has gotten worse in recent days.

According to timelines given by the suspects, the stabbing occurred days before police were called.

Barber is charged with capital murder and evading arrest.

Moore faces the same charges and an additional theft charge.

Both are in the Dallas County Jail.
