Two Dead, One Seriously Injured in Knife Attacks in Manhattan

A man launched a stabbing rampage in Manhattan on Monday morning, killing two people and seriously injuring a third without saying a word, authorities said.

The 51-year-old suspect, who had blood on his clothes and two kitchen knives in his hand, was detained by the police. Authorities have not yet released the names of the suspects or victims.

Mayor Eric Adams said at the press conference: “Three New Yorkers. “Unprovoked attacks that leave us searching for answers as to how something like this could happen.”

Investigators are working to determine what motivated the attack, which occurred over 2 1/2 hours.
New York Police Department chief of detectives Joseph Kenny explained: “No words were exchanged. No property was taken. I had just been brutally attacked.”
“He walked towards them and started attacking them with knives.”

The first stabbing on West 19th Street killed a 36-year-old construction worker who stood near his work site along the Hudson River shortly before 8:30 a.m. About two hours later, on the other side of Manhattan. A 68-year-old man was attacked while fishing in the East River near East 30th Street. Kenny confirmed that both men succumbed to their injuries.

It is understood that the suspect then headed north along the river bank. Around 10:55 a.m., a 36-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times near the United Nations headquarters on East 42nd Street, Kenny added. He is currently hospitalized in critical condition. A passing taxi driver witnessed the third attack and alerted nearby police officers at First Avenue and East 46th Street. Police teams caught the suspect in a short time.

This violence occurred particularly in a major city where crime has become a major issue in political debate and daily life as pandemic quarantines have led to deserted streets and increased disorder. According to police data, murders have decreased by 14 percent in New York over the past two years, while serious assaults have increased by nearly 12 percent.

Recent public stabbings, such as the fatal incident at the Coney Island subway station just weeks ago, have attracted a lot of attention. Mayor Adams called Monday’s violence “a clear-cut example” of failures in the criminal justice system and other areas.

The suspect in Monday’s attacks, who was reportedly homeless, was convicted in a criminal case several months ago and was arrested last month in connection with a grand larceny case, authorities said.
