Bradford flat residents criticize ‘disgusting’ car park tolls

In late October the local government said it was facing “serious financial challenges that are among the most significant for local governments nationally”.

Pauline Taylor, 64, who lives in the 88-flat complex, said: “I think it’s disgusting, most people here are in their 80s or 70s.

“They’ve been robbed of their winter fuel, now they’ll have to pay for parking permits.”

He added: “The council can remove the signs, we don’t want them anymore.”

A Bradford Council spokesman denied the review and said the new charges were agreed to in the March budget.

“It is quite common in other authorities to charge for permits, but we have kept permits free for as long as we can afford them,” they said.

“However, there is a cost to running these programs and, given the wider financial situation of councils across the country, we could no longer continue to support them.”

They concluded: “If residents have any concerns about enforcement they can contact the service and they may wish to send additional wardens to the area to check that the rules are being followed.”
