Malayalam actor Siddiqui, who has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons, finally has something to cheer about. The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted him bail in a rape case. A bench comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma said the veteran actor should surrender his passport and cooperate with the investigating officer in the investigation. The high court also noted that the complaint in the case was filed in August, eight years after the alleged incident occurred in 2016.

On September 30, the court granted Siddique interim protection from arrest in the case. Kerala Police claimed that Siddique was uncooperative in the investigation. The Kerala Police Special Investigation Team (SIT), in its case report, alleged that the veteran actor obstructed the investigation and destroyed electronic devices besides deleting his social media accounts.

”Considering that the complainant filed the complaint almost 8 years after the alleged incident in 2016 and also in 2018, somewhere on Facebook, she made allegations of alleged sexual harassment against 14 persons, including the complainant, and also to raise her complaint framed by the Kerala High Court We are inclined to accept the present objection subject to the circumstances. “From this perspective, if the appellant is arrested, he will be released on bail subject to the conditions of the court, including surrender of the passport to the IO,” the Bar and Bench reported, quoting the apex court.

On September 24, the Kerala High Court rejected Siddique’s bail plea in the rape case and said that considering the seriousness of the charges, his custodial interrogation was inevitable for proper investigation of the crime.
