Putin’s newly signed decree allows the use of nuclear weapons in retaliation for any serious attack on Russia, including drone strikes.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday approved revisions to its nuclear doctrine due to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The updated policy allows Russia to expand the use of atomic weapons in retaliation in the event of an external attack.

According to Reuters news agency, Putin’s newly signed decree allows the use of nuclear weapons in retaliation for any significant conventional attack on Russia, including drone strikes.

Russia’s announcement coincided with the United States granting limited permission to Ukraine for long-range missile strikes targeting Russian territory, especially after Putin warned the West about facilitating Kiev’s attack on Moscow.

What does Putin’s updated nuclear doctrine say?

According to the updated nuclear policy, Russia will consider an attack by a non-nuclear state as a coordinated attack against itself, especially when supported by a nuclear state, and will retaliate in kind.

This policy revision move comes a month after Putin’s previous statements calling for the revision of the doctrine in light of threats from allied states.

Putin has previously issued stern warnings to the United States and its European allies, warning that allowing Ukraine to attack deep into Russian territory with advanced Western weapons could escalate tensions and lead to direct conflict with Russia.
