Coroner identifies pedestrian hit by train in West Ashley

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Charleston County Coroner has determined that a pedestrian died after being struck by an Amtrak train early Saturday morning.

Elvin Thomas Dixon, 73, of Charleston, died in that crash, according to prosecutor Bobbi Jo O’Neal.

Inspector Michael Gillooly said the crash happened around 5:25 a.m. on the railroad tracks near Highway 61 and Bees Ferry Road.

Investigators said it appeared the pedestrian was trying to cross the tracks at the time. Gillooly said no injuries were reported to passengers on the train.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing and no charges have been filed. Police did not close lanes in the area, but witnesses reported the train was stopped on the tracks while the scene was active early that morning.
