Sentences in Mary Mahoney’s mislabeled seafood case

A prominent Coast restaurant and one of its co-owners were sentenced Monday in federal court for selling imported seafood as Gulf Fresh Seafood.

Mary Mahoney’s restaurant also agreed to forfeit $1.35 million, according to our media partner the Sun Herald.

Mary Mahoney’s co-owner Tony Cvitanovich, meanwhile, was sentenced to four months house arrest, three years probation and a $10,000 fine.

The restaurant and Cvitanovich said federal prosecutors calculate that Mary Mahoney served more than 55,000 mislabeled meals and purchased foreign fish from another Biloxi business, Quality Poultry and Seafood.

Cvitanovich and other restaurant leaders apologized in court for their role in mislabeling seafood.

As for Quality Poultry and Seafood, the business will be fined on December 11he.
