Why Do I Suddenly Want Adidas Sambas?

For the last few years, one sneaker has dominated the zeitgeist: Adidas Sambas. While it’s nearly impossible to walk down the block without seeing the stylish sneakers, they’ve also wowed celebs: Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Harry Styles between them. The sneakers have led to collaborations such as: Wales BonnerDover Street Market and even Dinsey. But after a long period of exposure, the Samba excitement seems to eventually fade. So why do I want a pair now more than ever?

Due to Not Like Other Girls Syndrome, I resisted purchasing the Sambas that were shaping up to be the next big sneaker, and instead stuck to my checkerboard Vans lace-up shoes and lace-up Pumas. But I couldn’t help but admire the slim silhouette of Sambas when I saw people like Kaia Gerber, Hailey Bieber, and Gigi Hadid incorporating them into their everyday style. Even Harry Styles and Paul Mescal gave me pangs of jealousy when I saw them kicking.

I can’t help but worry about the “right” time to buy a pair of Sambas. They have proven their durability since 1949, when they were designed for athletes to train on icy terrain all winter long. They have resonated within communities ever since; They found fans among footballers, skateboarders, Oasis members and fashion girls. They’re classics, for God’s sake, and this isn’t the first or last time they’ll be popular.

So, if you (like me) need a friendly reminder: who cares what’s trending? Nothing will ever be timeless than a pair of black and white tennis shoes.
