Man sentenced to 60 days ‘shock period’ in connection with the death of a young man in traffic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Independence man was sentenced to two months of probation and 10 months of probation after signing a plea agreement on charges related to the traffic death of Shawnee Mission Northwest student Will Ensley.

Johnson County District Court Judge Timothy McCarthy sentenced Darrin R. Boomershine on Monday.

Boomershine was originally charged with vehicular homicide and other traffic violations for the fatal crash that occurred on July 26, 2023, near W. 115th Street and Metcalf Boulevard in Overland Park.

He was driving a dump truck when he crashed into several cars.

Boomershine initially pleaded not guilty to the charges but later reached a plea agreement with prosecutors to amend the charges to dismissal of traffic violations.

The originally signed plea agreement required Boomershine to have a 30-day stun period, but McCarthy allowed 60 days.

Boomershine must also pay more than $92,000 in restitution.

Ensley was about to start his senior year of high school less than a month after he died in the crash. Friends and her swim coach remembered Ensley, who was 17 at the time, days after her death.

“Will was a coach’s dream, you know? I never had to worry about him; his grades, his effort in practice, I already knew what kind of Will I was going to get,” said longtime swim coach Ryan Lee He told KSHB 41 News reporter JuYeon Kim.
