This isn’t BYU, this is Boise St. With a bye in the College Football Playoff rankings, Oregon is No. 1.

Boise State earned the fourth and final bye in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night, knocking BYU out of the mix and placing the Big 12 awkwardly next to the SEC on the list of power conferences.

Undefeated Oregon once again received top billing; It was announced by the committee just hours after Big Ten number crunchers reviewed tiebreaker scenarios and realized the Ducks had clinched a spot in the conference title game no matter what happens between now and December.

Ohio State remained in No. 2, one point ahead of Southeastern Conference co-leader Texas. In the Atlantic Coast Conference, Miami was seeded eighth but lost third place and bid farewell to the top four conference leaders. Likewise, the Mountain West’s Boise State was ranked 12th by the committee but finished fourth and last.

BYU was seeded 14th but earned the final spot as the fifth-best conference leader in the 12-team bracket. That leaves No. 11 Tennessee, which lost to Georgia last week and now replaced the SEC Bulldogs last week: the first team to be eliminated.

There are three more weeks left in the standings, which will culminate in the Dec. 8 reveal that sets the framework for college football’s first 12-team playoff.

Boise State’s rise to the bye wasn’t all that unexpected after BYU dropped eight spots in the rankings following its first loss of the season. That’s a bit of a bummer for supporters of the Big 12, who note that every team in their league has a stronger strength of schedule than the Broncos. But BYU’s season has been full of close calls — four wins by six points or less — and that’s reflected in its rankings this week.

“Given some of the games they played and the close games, that was an indication that some of the teams below them needed to step up,” said Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, who served as chairman of the selection committee.

Of course, no one shouts it louder than the SEC, which is generally dismayed that Georgia was left out after last week’s lopsided loss to Mississippi. Now the Bulldogs are back in 10th place. Alabama is ranked No. 7 and Ole Miss is ranked No. 9. All three teams, including Tennessee, have two losses. However, no one can dispute the strength of the program of this conference.

“First, they lost to Georgia. “They have great offense, they have great defense, they play hard,” Manuel said of the committee’s decision to leave out Tennessee and bring in three other SEC teams. The committee had a hard time. “You’re talking about four really good teams.”

Other rankings: No. 4 Penn State, No. 5 Indiana and No. 6 Notre Dame.

And the biggest oddity this week was that SMU was undefeated and alone in first place in the ACC, but still ranked 13th.

This week’s predicted first round matchups

All games on campus, December 20-21.

No. 12 BYU, No. 5 Ohio State: The Buckeyes will be three-touchdown favorites.

No. 11 Georgia at No. 6 Penn State: Who needs a playoff berth? They placed 1st and 2nd in the 1983 Sugar Bowl competition; Penn State 27, Georgia 23.

No. 10 Mississippi, No. 7 Indiana: So far, the Hoosiers have been matched up against Tennessee, Alabama and now Ole Miss in the projected bracket.

No. 9 Alabama, No. 8 Notre Dame: The second (Tide) and fourth (Irish) winningest program in history.

Big matches this week

Indiana at Ohio State: Indiana’s weak schedule (106th according to ESPN) is hurting it. A win at Ohio State would break the series’ 28-game losing streak and end all of this.

Army at Notre Dame: Speaking of underdog programs, Army is ranked 133rd out of 134. A win here would put the 19th-seeded Black Knights into the conversation.

BYU at Arizona State: A win for the Sun Devils (and a loss for Colorado at Kansas) would throw the Big 12 into chaos and could cost it a first-round bye.
