Lexington short-term rental complaint line established

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — There are more than 700 registered short-term rentals in the Lexington area, and another 400 are likely operating without a license.

There is now a tip line to report problems.

“This allows citizens to search and file complaints regarding any violations under the ordinance so we know where they are, we can investigate and potentially pass them on,” Revenue Manager Wesley Hollbrook said.

He said that the reporting line will facilitate the process of receiving complaints to each relevant department and ensure that complaints are resolved earlier.

Notifications will be sent to property owners to keep them aware of any concerns regarding their property’s activities.

Examples of short-term rental ordinance violations include parties exceeding the property’s occupancy or violating the noise ordinance after 11 p.m.

Holbrook said if a crime occurs on the property, you could be charged, too. You may be cited for this, or up to $500 per day if you are operating without a license.

He said the online portal also allows people to submit evidence.

“We have a tool that allows us to collect photos and videos that complainants can add so we can use that to issue a citation or just as part of our evidence gathering process,” Hollbrook said.

LEX18 has reached out to Airbnb for comment. A spokesman said:

“We applaud the city for investing in new resources that allow hosts to quickly address their concerns. The hotline complements existing Airbnb resources to promote responsible tourism, such as our reservation screening technology, private anti-party advocacy, and the Neighborhood Hood Support Line.”
