Prosecutors oppose dismissing Trump hush money case

This was the first time a U.S. president (former or sitting) was convicted or charged with a crime.

Prosecutors had requested more time to consider next steps in the case, citing the need to balance “competing interests” between continuing the criminal case and preserving the president’s office.

Trump has pleaded not guilty in the case, which he has long portrayed as a politically motivated attempt by Democrat Bragg to interfere with his campaign.

Defense attorneys urged Merchan to dismiss the case, arguing that coming to him with the case while he is president would create what they called “unconstitutional impediments” to his ability to govern.

Trump’s lawyers also argued that Trump’s conviction should be overturned and the charges dismissed because of the U.S. Supreme Court’s July ruling that presidents cannot be tried for their official actions and that evidence of their official actions cannot be used in cases involving personal conduct.
