The election is over, and there are devastating consequences for those of us who don’t believe in President-elect Donald Trump and his agenda: rounding up immigrants, “protecting” women by stripping them of their rights, leaving Ukraine to his friend Vladimir Putin. We are faced with decisions about what to do – becoming “dictators” by unleashing the army on our political enemies.

First of all, this old man wants to thank Trump voters for giving me a reason to hang on for at least four more years. I refuse to leave this Earth in the dire situation that the family I love and others will be in starting in January.

What should those of us on the losing side do now?

Accept the loss, don’t attack the Capitol, and be part of the solution.

Support women, their spouses, daughters and grandchildren, both known and unknown. Even those who voted for a misogynist, risking their own future and their daughters and grandchildren.

Support immigrants, including those who voted for a man who thinks they are trash, who is just human, who works jobs most Americans don’t want.

Work to save our planet from climate change and our children from guns, the leading cause of death for children in the United States today.

Give an ear, a shoulder, or a helping hand to children who are being bullied; especially transgender kids, who are not the small handful who don’t play on girls’ sports teams but who attempt suicide at higher rates than cisgender kids.

We must comfort each other. Just yesterday – just a few days after the elections, where kindness and empathy replaced rudeness and evil – a kind woman came to me, almost in tears. A doctor who devoted his life to fighting cancer and saving lives; a woman of a different color than me; a woman who moved to the United States to both help others and enjoy our freedom; and a “real” Christian, or a Christian who was once thought to be real.

He hugged me friendly. It deals with misogyny and racism so prevalent here that a brilliant black woman fell for a person the doctor and I wouldn’t want to be neighbors with.

It makes one wonder who will be arrested by the Trump government. He worries about cutting or eliminating Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare, which keep our people fed and alive. I couldn’t allay their fears, “How could this happen here?” I couldn’t answer the question. But I can understand and respond.

Mostly my political “allies” we must work to be good Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, agnostics or atheists; good people, kind people, people who don’t cheat, don’t lie, don’t date porn stars, don’t commit fraud or crime.

Remember (and it may not be easy), many of those who support Trump will eventually need our help as well, because he is loyal only to himself and willingly turns on his “friends.” When they inevitably need us, we ask that they offer us only two things in return: a “please” and a promise to help restore America to what it should be.

Even though it’s hard, together we will make America kind again.
