Woman and 4-month-old son shot to death in drive-by shooting in Hartford, Connecticut – NBC New York

A woman and her 4-month-old son are dead after a reported drive-by shooting on New Britain Boulevard in Hartford Tuesday afternoon.

The police department said a triple shooting occurred in broad daylight at the corner of Hillside Boulevard and Zion Street just before 3 p.m.

Authorities said a person dropped off three people to the hospital. Later, the 20-year-old woman and her baby died.

They were identified as 20-year-old Jessiah Mercado and 4-month-old Messiah Diaz, both of Springfield, Massachusetts.

According to police, the third person shot had non-life-threatening injuries.

Lt. Aaron Boisvert said a car pulled up next to a second vehicle and began shooting. Police are looking for the person or persons involved in the incident.

Police said they are investigating the attack as a double homicide. The incident took place near a crowded market.

There is a large police presence at Hartford Hospital, where the shooting victims were dropped off.

“It’s terrible, absolutely terrible. That’s all I can say about it,” Boisvert said.

While officers have a pretty good idea of what happened, they say they are still trying to piece together what led to the fatal gunshot.

The midday violence comes at a time when some are concerned about crime and safety. Others were surprised to hear that something like this had appeared so close to their homes.

“I just stay, stay off the streets. You know, and I’m pretty safe. You know, I never see anything like this happening around here,” said Jose Santiago of Hartford.

Detectives are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 860-722-8477.
