A 63-year-old man was arrested after admitting he poured boiling water on his wife and attacked her with a hammer while she was sleeping at her home. Mushroom townhouse earlier this year.

At Cork Circuit Criminal Court on Wednesday Noel Twomey, of Carbery Grove, Knocknaheeny, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing harm to his wife Jackie at their home on January 15 last.

Twomey pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Ms Twomey by pouring boiling water on her and another charge of assault causing harm to her by attacking her with a hammer.

Defense barrister Shay Roche SC applied for an adjournment to allow for the preparation of both a medical and psychiatric report on his client, and Judge Helen Boyle granted the application.

Prosecuting lawyer Emmet Boyle said he would ask for a victim impact statement from Ms Twomey in light of Twomey’s request. Judge Boyle adjourned the case until February 12 for sentencing.

Gardaí gave an outline of the facts of the case when appealing Twomey’s bail in Cork District Court earlier this year; One of the grounds for objection was the seriousness of the accusation.

Det Garda Brian Murphy said Twomey, who had been married to his wife for almost 40 years, was still up and watching her return home via CCTV at around 3.30am on the night in question.

Det Garda Murphy said Jackie Twomey then went to bed and fell asleep but the defendant then filled a pot with water on the stove and armed himself with a claw hammer from the toolbox.

“When the water boiled, Noel Twomey took the pot and hammer and paced around the flat for a while before entering the bedroom,” Det Garda Murphy said.

“After pouring boiling water on his wife, he hit her in the head several times with a hammer; He expressed surprise that his wife was able to jump and leave the property.

“He also left the property and flagged down a patrol car on Bakers Road. He was visibly covered in blood and was holding a blood-stained hammer in a plastic bag.”

Det Garda Murphy said gardaí proceeded to the house where officers cordoned off the bedroom and began examining the property after it was declared a crime scene.

“This is very serious. He fell asleep in the safety of his own bed. Noel Twomey made the very conscious decision to boil a pot of water and pull a claw hammer from his toolbox.

“He stated that he walked around the apartment 10-20 times to see if he could carry out these actions. He entered the bedroom where his wife was sleeping and cowardly attacked her while she was sleeping.

“He showed no remorse and never asked about his wife’s condition. He comes across as a very controlling individual. “His actions were very disturbing and malicious.”
