New Jersey’s Unusual 2024 Earthquake Activity Slows in September and October

NEWARK, New Jersey — According to the latest seismic data, there was a noticeable increase in small earthquakes in New Jersey last year. While no earthquake has been reported in the last 24 hours or seven days, the state has seen one earthquake in the last 30 days and a total of 89 earthquakes in the last 365 days.

The strongest earthquake to hit New Jersey this month was a 1.6 magnitude quake near Califon; This suggests that the state’s typical seismic range remains at the lower end of the scale. However, the largest earthquake recorded in the state this year was the 4.8 magnitude earthquake at Whitehouse Station; This reflects that although major seismic activity is rare, it is not an unprecedented event.

Seismic experts note that the average frequency of small earthquakes in the state is relatively consistent, with most earthquakes generally not exceeding magnitude 2.0. The latest figures highlight this trend of regular, small tremors.

There is no immediate indication of a significant increase in seismic risk, but monitoring efforts continue to focus on areas known to have higher activity.

With more than 100 earthquakes recorded in the North Jersey area, things appear to be starting to slow down as we head into late fall and winter.
