KINGSTON, Jamaica — A woman accused of chopping her neighbor during a dispute will go to trial in June 2025.

Fifty-four-year-old Sharine Moore allegedly deeply injured her 59-year-old male neighbor’s finger during an argument and was charged with unlawful wounding.

According to the complainant, he and Moore got into an argument after she hit him. He claimed that the argument escalated and Moore stabbed him with a gun, causing him to be injured.

However, Moore gave a different explanation. He told the court the complainant blocked his path as he entered the back door of the property. When she bumped into him, the man reportedly pushed her and then attacked her with a “half las” (a small machete). He said he ran into the kitchen and grabbed a machete before taking action to defend himself. Moore also claimed this was not the first time the complainant had behaved aggressively towards him.

After hearing Moore’s account of the incident, Senior District Judge Sanchia Burrell encouraged him to “take this to court and tell it with the same conviction.”

The judge asked the man if he would consider mediation, but the man refused, stating that he wanted compensation instead. Judge Burrell responded sharply: “Everyone wants money and this is not a money court.” When asked to specify an amount, the man did not answer.

The hearing was postponed to June 19, 2025.
