Mother who saw her baby seriously injured was arrested

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – An Evansville mother faces charges after police say they found her baby critically injured.

According to a statement, officers were called to the 1500 block of South Kentucky Avenue due to an unresponsive child.

When emergency crews arrived on scene, AMR immediately took the one-year-old child to the hospital, officials said.

The Evansville Police Department said in an interview with 20-year-old mother Alexandrea Ring, she described her child soiling his clothes earlier in the day because his diaper did not fit properly. Ring said that after changing his diaper, the baby started crying.

According to police, Ring went on to explain that she “couldn’t handle crying” and that it “made her angry,” then held the child over the Pack ‘n Play and “threw him in.”

Officers later said Ring, who was pregnant, changed her story, saying her large belly prevented her from properly placing the child in the Pack ‘n Play and she accidentally dropped him.

He was also said to have explained that after picking up the baby and laying him on the floor, the baby fell face down into a cabinet, hitting his head on a metal piece, which caused bruising to his forehead.

According to the statement, Ring did not call 9-1-1 until approximately three hours after the incident occurred.

The statement said the child appeared to have suffered serious head injuries, including bleeding and swelling, requiring emergency surgery to relieve pressure on the brain.

The child was also said to have additional bruising, including on his stomach, bottom and arms.

Ring was arrested and charged with domestic battery and neglect of a dependent.
