Wednesday Practice Observations for Florida State Before Charleston Southern

Wednesday Practice Observations for Florida State Before Charleston Southern

Florida State practiced for the second straight day Wednesday morning as a non-conference matchup with Charleston Southern approached. Despite the windy and overcast conditions in Tallahassee, the Seminoles took the field with great energy and enthusiasm.

I thought the team competed at a high level, but there were some errors in execution such as drops or over-coverages. While the offense created bigger plays than yesterday, the defense did a solid job of putting pressure on the quarterback.

NoleGameday had multiple staff members present throughout the entire session, and we noted some observations from various position groups. The Seminoles will not hold another open practice before Saturday’s game.

— There were representatives from the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, New York Giants and others watching the session.

— Ryan Fitzgerald connected from 36 yards, 46 yards and 47 yards. Jake Weinberg was pure from 36 yards out.

— I felt like Luke Kromenhoek was the more inconsistent of the two point guards, but the good moments were a lot of fun. He led an impressive two-minute drive that culminated in a 47-yard field goal to start the practice. Kromenhoek showed off his pocket mobility and elusiveness with a few tackles where he evaded pressure and went out of bounds for a positive gain. Kromenhoek found Landen Thomas twice in the period and hit Amaree Williams to the sideline with just seconds left to set up the shot.

Later in practice, Kromenhoek sent a deep ball to Elijah Moore for a big play on 1-on-1s. He threw a well-placed pass to Darion Williamson for a touchdown on 7v7.

— Brock Glenn also had a good day. His best representation was a touchdown pass to Elijah Moore, where the quarterback appeared to throw a short pass before throwing a deep ball to the true freshman. Glenn ran about 50 yards to celebrate with Moore after the play. At the end of training, he found BJ Gibson in the middle of the defense with an accurate pass. Glenn also fired into a tight window to connect with Amaree Williams for a touchdown.

— Kentron Poitier made the offensive catch of the day with a ridiculous grab along the sideline, turning back and catching a fastball all over Azareye’h Thomas.

— Lawayne McCoy caught a touchdown in the corner of the end zone on a 1-on-1. Later in the day, he made an impressive catch, bending down and extending his body into position to pass to a defender in the area.

— Brian Courtney ran a nifty route on 1v1s and easily created space up the middle for a catch.

— Patrick Payton had his moments throughout the day, especially on third down. When he ran to intercept a skilled receiver after the catch, his effort was exposed on a replay and he was forced into a tackle that ultimately went out of bounds. On the next play, Payton completed a pass at the line of scrimmage. As practice progressed, he made multiple stops at the goal line.

— Azareye’h Thomas was active in reporting, not giving in much during practice. He nearly picked off a deep ball on 1-on-1s and took an athletic one-handed deflection in the corner of the end zone to prevent a touchdown.

— Kevin Knowles left the bench with a choice. Shawn Murphy took advantage of a fumbled pass, scooped it up and ran in the opposite direction.

— Edwin Joseph breaks up a pass in the middle on 1v1s. On his next possession, Hykeem wasn’t fooled by Williams stepping out of line of scrimmage, walling him off and working in front of the receiver to deflect the pass with one hand.

— Darrell Jackson didn’t let Kromenhoek get away during the third practice. The quarterback went into the pocket to take off, but Jackson reached out with one hand and pulled him back for the sack.

— Tomiwa Durojaiye came right through the middle in this period.

— Ashlynd Barker punched the ball and recovered it after Brian Courtney’s catch.

— Grady Kelly deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage on a red zone run.
