MSU suspends Theta Chi fraternity amid hazing investigation

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan State University confirms it has “temporarily suspended” its Theta Chi fraternity while it operates. Investigation into harassment allegations.

The interim suspension means the fraternity is prohibited from “participating in or hosting Fraternity and Sorority Life events.”

On Tuesday, 6 News reviewed a video circulating online that appears to be part of the alleged harassment incident.

The video circulating online is a recording of another phone playing the video, which shows four people on their hands and knees with their faces close to the ground. After someone off-camera yells “go,” the foursome appear to start eating something off the floor.

Off-screen, people can be heard shouting “Win it…” and “You better eat my eggs, b…” At least six other college-age men sit around those eating off the floor.

“University policy strictly prohibits hazing. The University takes all allegations of harassment seriously. “Any student organization, group or individual who engages in threatening activity may be subject to disciplinary action for violating University policy, as well as criminal prosecution and/or civil litigation for violating state and federal laws,” said MSU Director of Communications Mark Bullion.

Theta Chi national office emailed the following statement saying it had also suspended the fraternity in connection with the hazing investigation:

Theta Chi Fraternity is aware of allegations of hazing at Michigan State University. The Beta Zeta Chapter at Michigan State was suspended and an investigation was launched. The Brotherhood will take appropriate action based on the results of this investigation.
Theta Chi has a strict policy prohibiting harassment of any kind. Hazing is directly contrary to Theta Chi’s mission to develop Men of Determination and has no place in the fraternity experience.
