Two arrests made in South American Robbery Group targeting wealthy East Side neighborhoods

AVON, Connecticut (WFSB) – For nearly five years, Avon police have been investigating the South American Burglary Group, a team of criminals who broke into homes on the East Coast, including Connecticut.

The group comes from Chile and came to the country on a temporary visa. They target affluent neighborhoods around the East Side to steal cash, jewelry and other valuables.

“They will enter the country with a temporary visa. “Once they arrive in the country, they are not held accountable and can move freely,” said Lt. John Schmalberger of the Avon Police Department. “They’ll come from Miami or something, work through rental car companies, drive up to the beach and steal. “They have no real connection to CT or Avon, they were just in town for the time it took to steal and were gone.”

Avon and Farmington police have been trying to bust the crew for years.

Avon police say there have been about two dozen home burglaries or attempted burglaries in the last four or five years.

The last one was on Robkins Road in May.

“They’re looking for an open window, maybe an open slider on the backside. They will break in if necessary and then go into the master bedroom where most of people’s valuables are kept,” Lt. Schmalberger said.

There are five suspects. Two suspects were arrested after being pulled over in Camden County, Georgia.

Misael Palomino, 32, and Alexandria Bravo, 27, will be held in Connecticut on $500,000 bond.

The suspects will return to Connecticut tonight and appear in court tomorrow.

They are charged with attempted burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary.

An Avon woman who lived near one of the burglaries took action when she heard about the organized crime squad.

“I implemented more security cameras and precautions in my own home,” he said. “I’m starting to get very nervous. Whenever I leave, I make sure my house is secure and the alarm is on.”

“We hold community meetings with victims of these crimes and reassure them that we are working hard to solve them. It is difficult to solve them and arrest them,” Schmalberger said.
