Tribute to country radio legend Big T – The Irish News

A memorial service was held following the death of country music radio legend Trevor Campbell, who died at the age of 78.

Known as Big T, he was a household name on radio in Northern Ireland for over fifty years.

He died last week following a brief illness after hosting his final radio show in Downtown Country.

Downtown Radio and Downtown Country Content Director Stuart Robinson described Big T as a “pioneer” and “pioneer.”

“The entire Downtown team is devastated by the news that our dear friend and colleague Trevor Campbell (Big T) has died at the age of 78 following a short illness,” Mr. Robinson said.

“The term legend is thrown around often, but Trevor was a radio legend in every sense of the word.

“A pioneer, pioneer and household name in radio in Northern Ireland for 50 years, no other radio personality here has come or will come close to achieving what Trevor has achieved throughout his career.

“Trevor loved radio and lived for it, and radio loved him. Just a few days ago, he was still on the air on his hugely popular show, doing what he does best.

“There will be much more said in the coming days about ‘Big T’ and how he impacted the lives of so many people in Northern Ireland over the decades, but for now our thoughts are with Trevor’s family, friends and the Downtown audience who loved him so much.”

Speaking to the BBC, U105 broadcaster Frank Mitchell expressed his admiration for his former colleague.

“It is no doubt an exaggeration to say that he was a legend in broadcasting and he will be greatly missed,” Mr Mitchell said.

Former First Minister Arlene Foster was among many who praised the popular presenter on social media.

Mrs Foster said: “I was really sorry to hear of Big T’s death. When I meet a character like this it’s always a big smile and ‘how are you girl’. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”
