Ronald Tannur Arrested Again Due to His Girlfriend’s Death

Jakarta. Prosecutors re-arrested Gregorius Ronald Tannur on Sunday after the Supreme Court found him guilty of aggravated assault that led to the death of his girlfriend, Dini Sera Afrianti, in a case that received national attention last year.

“Ronald Tannur was arrested at 2:40 pm today at a house in the Victoria Regency Complex in Surabaya,” Harli Siregar, a spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office, said in a text message. “We complied with the Supreme Court’s guilty verdict.”

Ronald was initially acquitted of murder and aggravated assault charges by judges at the Surabaya District Court in July. Despite video evidence showing Ronald crashing his car into Dini in a parking lot in Surabaya, they argued that the woman died from consuming too much alcohol and that Ronald had no malicious intent to kill her.

The board also ordered prosecutors to release Ronald immediately.

While the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office filed an objection to the Supreme Court, it secretly launched an investigation against the judges.

On October 23, the AGO announced that they, along with Ronald’s defense lawyer Lisa Rahmat, had arrested three judges (Erintuah Damanik, Mangapul, and Heru Hanindyo) on bribery charges. Searches of his homes in Surabaya, Semarang and Jakarta revealed banknotes with a total value exceeding Rp 20 billion ($1.3 million). Prosecutors allege the judges took bribes from Ronald’s lawyer in exchange for an acquittal.

Following these arrests, the Supreme Court overturned the acquittal, sentencing Ronald to five years in prison for aggravated assault rather than murder.

Two days later, the AGO announced the arrest of a former Supreme Court official, identified as Zarof Ricar, for allegedly taking bribes from the defense team to influence judges during appeal proceedings in the hope of upholding the acquittal.

Zarof, who retires from the Supreme Court in 2022, is accused of receiving R5 billion from the lawyer to be distributed among himself and the three judges presiding over the case.

However, a search of Zarof’s private residence in Jakarta revealed Rp 920 billion ($58.8 million) in cash and 51 kilograms of gold bars; prosecutors linked Zarof to past corrupt behavior while serving on the Supreme Court.

It is not yet clear whether prosecutors will file corruption charges against Zarof regarding the money and gold finds.
