If you need proof that the NRL’s move to Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii is fiercely competitive, look no further than the latest picture of the Wallabies squad.

The former Sydney Roosters star has made a fantastic start to his rugby career after parachuting into the Wallabies squad after the NRL season ended.

He made an immediate impact with a man-of-the-match performance in the stunning win against England on his debut, before coming off the bench to help the Aussies destroy Wales.

But the former NRL star’s strange behavior in the team photo ahead of the Wales game has now come to light.

Presenter Michael Atkinson said on Stan Rugby: “This is the team photo before the Wales Test; Joseph Suaalii is in the second row, second from left.”

‘This is a guy who’s about six feet tall, six feet tall, and he still thinks he has to stand on his tiptoes.’

Former Wallaby Tim Horan has revealed Suaalii is no Robinson Crusoe when it comes to this practice.

‘Everyone, all the backs do this,’ he said.

‘All the backs are standing on their tiptoes.’

Suaalii himself recently revealed another competitive advantage he has over many other players.

While speaking to Mark Bouris on the Straight Talk podcast, he revealed that he has never touched alcohol in his life.

‘I’ve never actually had a sip of alcohol,’ he admitted.

‘My parents never drank, I never saw them drink when I was growing up and I always had fun without it. I’ll still go out.’

As a teenager signing for the Sydney Roosters, it would have been easy for Suaalii to be dragged down another path, but he revealed one of his teammates helped him stay on the right path.

‘I felt like another person who helped me a lot was Joey Manu,’ he said.

‘He doesn’t drink and is very comfortable in his own skin.

‘When I first came to the NRL and saw him doing it, I felt like that’s what I wanted to do.

‘This is my brother, I want to do what he does.’

After Samu Kerevi’s tour ended with a three-match suspension, the door was opened for Suaalii to return to the starting team against Scotland in the Wallabies’ bid for the Spring Tour Grand Slam.

The midfielder’s yellow card for a high shot during Australia’s win over Wales in Cardiff on Sunday was upgraded to a 20-minute red card.

On Wednesday the 31-year-old’s fate was sealed, with a disciplinary panel upholding the on-field decision and halving a standard six-week sentence citing guilt, remorse and a good record.

Kerevi can serve the suspension for one more match if he completes World Rugby’s coaching intervention programme. However, the British Isles tour ended.

He will miss the Scotland Test this weekend and the first test match for Japanese club Urayasu D-Rocks.

The final Irish Test falls outside the international window. Kerevi would not be able to take part in this match anyway and therefore was not evaluated by the board.

The Wales Test was Kerevi’s first test in 13 months since the ill-fated World Cup.

Suaalii, who came off the bench against Wales, is set to return to the starting position where he impressed on his debut against England two weeks ago.

Other options include the Australian XV following Dylan Pietsch’s injury. Joining the top cast are Hamish Stewart and Josh Flook.
