How to make Thanksgiving dinner on a budget

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — Thanksgiving is a week away and it’s almost time for the feast.

“We found that if we get a menu for ten people choosing turkey, stuffing, salad, dinner rolls, pumpkin pie, cranberries, opting for store brands, you’ll save about $17 compared to all brands.” said Robin Wenzel. Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute.

While store brands are almost always the cheaper option, there’s one Thanksgiving staple where it’s better to buy brand name. “That’s where the deal with the cranberry brand is,” Wenzel said. “This year has been a great year for cranberries, and one of the providers of cranberry brands is really dominant in that market, so they have the scale to really cater to the consumer at slightly more palatable price points these days.”

It’s better if it’s cheaper. Free is better.

“Some grocery stores offer special promotions, offering a free frozen turkey when you spend a certain amount of money,” the budget expert said. Andrea Woroch. This includes Albertsons. Shoppers can earn up to 24 pounds of free turkey when they spend $100 in a single purchase.

“Grocery stores are giving away these free turkeys, they view them as loss leaders because they’re willing to lose profit on that turkey to get you in and spend more on other ingredients,” Woroch said.

Shop around to save extra, compare costs and be sure to use store apps for digital coupons.

Woroch says one of the easiest ways to save money on a big meal is to make it a small meal. Ask guests to bring their favorite dishes and spread the cost.
