Westfield Newmarket security guard stabbed: Man in Auckland District Court charged with aggravated assault

He will reappear on December 19, and his name will be temporarily suppressed until then.

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend, from the Auckland City CIB, said police rushed to the shopping center at 277 Broadway following the incident when a man approached by security guards pulled out a knife.

“At this point, we determined they were trying to contact the man regarding a previous incident.”

An eyewitness described seeing a “very agitated man wearing a balaclava” running past shortly before the incident, which took place near luxury fashion store Moncler.

Mark Knoff-Thomas, chief executive of the Newmarket Business Association, said the security guard was injured in an altercation with a person being pursued by police. New channel ZB.

Knoff-Thomas said he visited the injured man in the hospital.

“(This is) a terrible situation for him and for all of us.”

He said the Newmarket Security team was dedicated to “keeping our community safe”.

“It has been created with this purpose in mind, to ensure the protection of retailers, businesses and their customers in the area, so that all visitors can enjoy the area safely. “I am proud of the work they do every day.”

There was no other threat to the area or the public.

“The main issue we have right now is the knife crime There is an increase in Auckland and New Zealand and this worries me very much.

“This was an isolated incident but needless to say, there have been instances of knife crime occurring in Auckland and across the country.”

Knoff-Thomas said criminal charges for knife crime should be reconsidered.

“If people are carrying, using or using knives as a weapon, penalties for these incidents need to be significantly increased.”

Epsom MP David Seymour said he was thinking of “the victim of this senseless act and his family”.

“Newmarket’s security guards are local heroes. “They calmly and professionally put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect Newmarket’s businesses and visitors.”
