Battalion chief experienced medical emergency and died while fighting the fire

PITTSBURGH (WPXI) — The city of Pittsburgh is mourning the loss of a battalion fire chief.

Pittsburgh Fire Bureau Battalion Chief John Walsh experienced a medical emergency while managing the fire Wednesday night.

He was taken to a hospital here died later.

Walsh was 60 years old.

“John Walsh was an excellent tactician on the fireground. He had a command presence that engendered confidence and calm, and more importantly, he was a great family man, a great friend and a great person,” said Pittsburgh Fire Bureau Chief Darryl Jones. “This is a deep cut. “We will not get through this process easily.”

The city says he devoted 37 years of his life to the fire department.
