One person died and dozens were injured when a truck crashed into a bus stop near Tel Aviv

TEL AVIV — Israeli emergency services are treating dozens of injured people after a truck dropping off passengers crashed into a bus at a bus stop near the Glilot military base north of Tel Aviv on Sunday morning.

A spokesman for the Israeli police said a preliminary investigation showed that the truck collided with passengers as well as the bus.

Israeli police said civilians at the scene “shot at the truck driver and neutralized him.”

Following the attack, a 72-year-old man was taken to Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. His condition deteriorated and he died from his injuries, the hospital confirmed to NBC News.

The circumstances of the crash are under investigation, and Israeli police have not said whether they are treating the incident as a suspected terrorist attack or a traffic accident.

However, Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was a “natural reaction” to Israel’s actions in “Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem.”

A video geolocated by NBC News shows the immediate aftermath and rescue operation and is narrated in Hebrew by a woman who says she was on the bus that was hit.

“We were at the Haim Hertzog base, a truck came at full force and hit us,” he said. “We managed to escape, some of our people were stranded, and our elderly were also stranded.” In the video, it is seen that many people are trapped under the truck, and some are helping rescue teams.

“You can’t understand what’s going on here,” he said. “Oh God, God, I can’t look at this.”

In a video posted on X, Ronit Glazer of Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency medical service, described a chaotic scene when responders received a call of a “mass casualty incident” near Glilot Junction.

He said MDA sent “maintenance units, ambulances, motorcycles, first responders, paramedics and emergency services” to the scene.

MDA Emergency Services and Paramedics are providing medical treatment and evacuating the injured to nearby hospitals. In the statement, it was stated that a total of 35 people were injured, 6 seriously, 5 moderately and 20 lightly. Four people suffer from anxiety.

Volunteer emergency services United Hatzalah said “many pedestrians” were involved and people were trapped under the truck for 30 minutes after the incident.

In a separate incident later Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces said “a terrorist accelerated his vehicle towards IDF soldiers conducting counter-terrorism activities” in the village of Hizma in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

In the statement, it was stated that the person pulled a knife from his vehicle and “tried to carry out a knife attack”, but was killed by soldiers. No IDF injuries were reported.
